“Meditation” by Maarja Jõemägi
In my last article, we explored the mind and the importance of training the mind. Today I will dive a bit more deeply into meditation - a practice that is perfect for silencing the mind so that we could be more in our hearts.
Meditation is a practice of quieting our minds so we could sit with ourselves and not get lost into thoughts racing through our minds like on an endless highway where no exit offers itself for escape. It's a process of calling in our desires using the power of the mind. Whether we meditate or not, we are always manifesting, always creating our reality with our thoughts. For meditation, we can use breathing techniques, visualization, or a mantra to get the mind out of its habitual way, and into stillness.
In today's busy and information-filled world it's important to practice meditation for many reasons. There are countless benefits of meditation, such as reduced stress, improved focus, memory and concentration. Meditation can also lower blood pressure and reduce chronic pain and anxiety. I have experienced so many benefits myself, and meditation has been such a game-changer for me. As a teenager, meditation was a perfect tool for me to cope with anxiety and sleep better. Not to mention, understand me and the world around me on a more intimate level.
I think there is no reason that every single person on the planet shouldn't meditate. It should be taught in schools and should be as normal part of our daily life as brushing our teeth or drinking water. I like to think of meditation as a shower for the mind. As we wash and clean our bodies, it is as important to clean our minds from all the rubbish that doesn't serve us in any way.
I remember reading somewhere that if we teach our kids to meditate, we eliminate violence and suffering from the world in one generation. I don't know if that can happen so quickly, but I know that if we want to create more love and compassion, meditation plays a vital role in this.
Let this be a reminder for you to take time to sit down with yourself, close your eyes and meditate.
